Why are headshots like jewelry? "Settling" the debate between indoor/ outdoor headshots.

Bear with me. Let me explain. As a professional photographer, I often get asked, and have personally seen the difference between outdoor vs indoor headshots for professionals. The way I see it? It’s like jewelry. Professional headshots are the most important marketing tool in any professional’s arsenal to let the public see who you are, so color, setting and style all play important role in the outcome of your photos. Therefore, just like jewelry should enhance the outfit, not distract from it, headshot location should have the same outcome.

Indoor or outdoor headshots. Which type of photoshoot is better for you? It depends on the look you want and what you are trying to promote. This is one of the reasons I do a through consultation before your session and ask you questions about your industry, job, competitors and inspirations photos. Basically, depending on industry, I often prefer indoor photoshoots to keep the look professional and the focus on you however in some situations, an outdoor photoshoot can really give the headshot that extra oomph.

Let me break it down:

In-studio headshots are professional, the focus is on the face and because of the controlled environment, there are more options and comfortable setting. If you are looking for a clean look with a sophisticated style, I recommend in-studio headshots.

Outdoor headshots are approachable and colorful but the background can often distract from the face. They can be unpredictable as we are victims to the weather and have to adjust accordingly (sometimes reschedule). For me, I love, and am willing to make an outdoor photoshoot happen when it enhances the look and fits the industry. An outdoor session is a great option for promoting athletes, interior/landscaper designers, or fitness trainers. Even realtors! I love the look of a realtor headshot in front of an impressive front door or a physical therapist with a track or gym in the background. Like jewelry, if the background does not enhance the photo, it distracts. You see?
